Cat hole

The individually dug "cat hole" is one of the most acceptable means of feces disposal. Be sure to be at least 200 feet away from all sources (camp, water source, trail) as a general guide. Use whatever will work to dig a hole such as a flat rock, stick, an item that you are carrying, etc. The hole should be anywhere from 4 to 12 inches deep, and wide enough that you will not fill it up. After use, completely cover the waist by filling the hole with dirt, sand, or snow (depending on conditions) and pack down. This will help in reducing odors as well as the number of flies and insects.
