Hygiene

Personal hygiene is something that is probably the last thing on your mind when you find yourself in a survival situation. But cleanliness is an important factor in preventing infection and disease. It becomes even more important in a survival situation. Poor hygiene can reduce your chances of survival. The cleaner you stay, the healthier you remain. Some of the main areas to focus on to maintain good personal hygiene are:survival_hygene_sanitation

Sanitation

Do not designate a toilet area near your water source, up hill from your camp, or near the place where you store or prepare food. Make your designated toilet at least 100 to 200 feet away from all sources. When you construct your toilet you can make a "chair" with support beams for example, screen the area with a tarp, or whatever you can think of to make the area more private / familiar. Types of facilities for human waste disposal are:

no-toilet

  • Cat hole
  • Straddle trench
  • Urinal
  • Deep pit latrine
  • Burn out barrel
  • Mound latrine
  • Bored hole latrine
  • Pit latrine
  • Urine trough and soakage pit

  • Evaporation beds
  • Pail latrine
  • Slit trench
